This track is from one of the seminal gospel albums of all time, Lady Soul Aretha Franklin’s “Amazing Grace” album recorded live in LA over two nights in 1972. It is an unforgettable collection of songs featuring an amazing band and The Southern California Community Choir directed by Rev. Jame’s Cleveland backing Aretha up. If … Read more and listen Oh Mary Don’t You Weep
This song will forever stay in my head. I have never heard any U.S. vocal group perform this song, but in Europe…seeming mostly in Italy and Germany, there are LOTS of recordings of this song. I’ve never figured out why more choirs in the US don’t pick it up. I first learned of the song … Read more and listen My Soul Has Been Redeemed
Yup, “It’s All About That Bass”…but in this cast the artist’s last name, Fontella BASS, is pronounced like the fish, not the musical instrument. You Don’t Know What the Lord Told Me” was written and recorded by Shirley Caesar, “The Queen of Gospel Music”, in 1965. Just just listened to it, and IMHO, it doesn’t … Read more and listen You Don’t Know What the Lord Told Me
There is ALWAYS a story behind a song…today’s song being a good case in point. I’ve always loved the 1980’s song “Carry Me Home” by Keith Pringle and The Pentecostal Community Choir. It moves right along with a beat that won’t stop. It also has a great walking bass line and a terrific vamp. But … Read more and listen Carry Me Home
This song, written by gospel song writer Steven Roberts was originally recorded in 1982 by the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) Mass Choir and featured the late, great, Daryl Coley as lead singer. THIS version was recorded by James Cleveland and his Cleveland Singers along with the New Jersey Mass Choir two years later … Read more and listen He’ll Never Let You Down
The song “Lord Keep Me Day By Day” was first released in 1959 by The (Fabulous) Caravans. [Albertina Walker – group leader/founder, Inez Andrews, Shirley Caesar, Delores Washington, and Eddie Williams, their accompanist who also sang.] The song was sometimes attributed to Canavan leader Albertina Walker, “The First Lady of Gospel” (I love honoriffics!), but … Read more and listen Lord Keep Me Day By Day
Here is some very REAL DEAL church gospel music for you. Many years ago James Early, then director of Joyful Voices of Inspiration gospel choir asked if I could digitize some old audio cassettes for him and put the tracks on CDs (no DVD’s then!). I said sure! The tapes turned out to be recordings … Read more and listen Walking In The Light Of Jesus’ Love
I loved this song the minute I heard it. At first I thought it was an contemporary performance of an old gospel song, but as I dug a bit online I found it was written sometime in the 2000’s. It was made popular in 2014 by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir directed by Cynthia Cymbala. Cynthia … Read more and listen Now I’m On My Way (Jesus Brought Me Out)
This is a wonderful gospel adaptation of the old familiar Thanksgiving hymn, “We Gather Together” (to ask the Lord’s blessing). Although I have had this song in my music library for quite a while, I just really LISTENED to it for the first time earlier today. At first I didn’t have a clue to what … Read more and listen We Gather Together
I think this cut is one of the best performances by Joyful Voices of Inspiration. In my humble option, the choir sounds awesome…like a real gospel choir!! It didn’t hurt that we had a smoking band backing us up! This cut is from the early 2000’s when James Early was the choir’s director. James was … Read more and listen Unspeakable Joy!
